In 2012, a number of news headlines captured a growing trend in fertility medicine—the increased presence of lenders specializing in fertility loans, often promoted or featured by fertility clinics and physicians. Streamlining the financing of assisted reproduction connects patients with loan company representatives either on‐site or through a clinic's webpage. While medical professionals and clinics do not receive a commission for product promotion, this recent spate of news reports identified investment opportunities for physicians in private lending firms and some of (...) the physicians involved in such investments. In facilitating the process to obtain credit and, in some instances, benefiting financially through equity ownership in private lending firms, participating physicians declare this a “win‐win situation” with no clear conflict of interest. The emergence of these specialty lenders seems a natural development in the current fertility market, but the growing use of private fertility loans suggests the need for further inquiry. (shrink)

The fact that the same equations or mathematical models reappear in the descriptions of what are otherwise disparate physical systems can be seen as yet another manifestation of Wigner's “unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics.” James Clerk Maxwell famously exploited such formal similarities in what he called the “method of physical analogy.” Both Maxwell and Hermann von Helmholtz appealed to the physical analogies between electromagnetism and hydrodynamics in their development of these theories. I argue that a closer historical examination of the different (...) ways in which Maxwell and Helmholtz each deployed this analogy gives further insight into debates about the representational and explanatory power of mathematical models. Zusammenfassung Im ersten Teil des Beitrags wird die Forderung nach Einheit und Zweckfreiheit der klassischen Humboldt’schen Universität mit den gegenwärtigen Tendenzen zu anwendungsorientierter Drittmittelforschung, interdisziplinärer Kooperation sowie universitärer Profil- und Schwerpunktbildung konfrontiert. Im zweiten Teil wird erörtert, welche Legitimationsprobleme die Nützlichkeitsdebatte in den Geisteswissenschaften ausgelöst hat, die in der Vergangenheit als offizielle Vertreter des humanistischen Bildungsideals auftraten. Im abschließenden dritten Teil wird das Verhältnis von Einheit und Vielheit sowie von Theorie und Praxis in der Sportwissenschaft re-thematisiert sowie deren wissenschaftstheoretischen Defizite (...) vor dem Hintergrund der veränderten universitären Rahmenbedingungen problematisiert. Zusammenfassung Das Paradigma der Postmoderne fand bislang in der Sportwissenschaft kaum Beachtung. Daher wird sein erkenntnistheoretisches Programm zunächst exemplarisch dargestellt und einer kritischen Reflexion unterzogen. Danach wird die Erkenntnisrelevanz postmoderner Theoreme für die Sportwissenschaft problematisiert. Von besonderem Interesse ist hierbei die Fragestellung, unter welchen Voraussetzungen der Postmodernismus eine erstzunehmende Herausforderung für eine zukunftsweisende sportwissenschaftliche Theorien-Konzeption sein könnte. Auf Dauer wird die Sportwissenschaft nicht umhin können, sich kritisch mit dem in den Mutterwissenschaften kontrovers geführten Diskurs einer postmodernen Revision der Moderne auseinander (...) zu setzen. Daraus folgt, dass mit jedem Satz auch der duale Satz aus den Axiomen beweisbar ist. Dagegen kann aus der Dualität des Axiomensystems nicht geschlossen werden, dass in einem Modell mit jedem Satz auch der duale Satz gilt; noch weniger folgt, dass ein Modell eine eineindeutige Abbildung zulässt, welche Punkte and Geraden unter Erhaltung der (...) Inzidenz vertauscht. Im Falle der projektiven Geometrie sind solche Modelle bekannt; für die einfache Typentheorie wird gezeigt, dassa die Existenz solcher Modelle äquivalent ist mit der Widerspruchsfreiheit des Systems « New Foundations ».Zusatz. Die Beiträge stehen unter den Leitbegriffen,,Pluralität",,,Subjektivität" und,,Kritik", die als Schlüsselkonzepte der Moderne gelten können.

The topic of this paper is the semantic analysis of the sentences in (1). (1a,b) contain the adverbial modifiers 'one after the other' and 'dog after dog', respectively, which add to the simple (1') information on how the overall event of the dogs entering the room is to be divided into subevents based on a division of the group of dogs into individual dogs. The papers in this collection present a diversity of views on the epistemology of religious belief. There is a diversity of views about the intelligibility of particular religious beliefs: for example, about the reality of God's existence and of miracles. There is further disagreement concerning the reasonableness of religious belief itself. Some contributors argue that locating grounds for believing in God is still a fruitful undertaking. Both issues raise the problem of the philosopher's position vis-a-vis religious belief. Are philosophers in (...) a privileged position to determine either the reasonableness or the intelligibility of religious belief? Or is philosophy, properly understood, a descriptive task? The papers in this collection present a diversity of views on this issue, too. Drawing on the works of Kierkegaard, a few of the contributors argue that philosophical description cannot be neatly divorced from religious persuasion. Whatever their views on these issues, however, the contributors accept that philosophical discussion cannot proceed very far without attention to what religious believers say about their beliefs and the practices in which they take part. The current volume of the Parmenides Series "On Thinking" addresses our deepest and most personal experience of the world, the experience of "the present," from a modern perspective combining physics and philosophy. Despite widespread evidence that fictional models play an explanatory role in science, resistance remains to the idea that fictions can explain. A central source of this resistance is a particular view about what explanations are, namely, the ontic conception of explanation. According to the ontic conception, explanations just are the concrete entities in the world. I argue this conception is ultimately incoherent and that even a weaker version of the ontic conception fails. Fictional models can succeed in offering genuine explanations (...) by correctly capturing relevant patterns of counterfactual dependence and licensing correct inferences. Using the example of Newtonian force explanations of the tides, I show how, even in science, fiction can be a vehicle for truth. (shrink)

Interdisziplinäre Beiträge aus Theologie, Pflege (...) und Ethik geben Einblicke in ein breitgefächertes Themenfeld, das die Frage nach dem Selbstverständnis des Menschen in einer transformativen Gesellschaft stellt.
